The Nail Tech Skill Roadmap: Nail Your Skills, One Step at a Time
Looking back, this is how I'd do it: I'd start with the easiest skill - gel polish - and gradually build up to more advanced treatments.
When we are just starting out with nails, it is also perfect time to think about social media. Many nail techs ten to focus only on learning the skill, assuming clients will somehow find them. But it doesn't work that way unfortunately. If people do not know you exist, they won't come. Even if you are just beginning, setting up your social media and learning how to use it something you need to prioritise from the start too.
Let’s break it down.

0. Research
Before anything else, take time to research. This step is about understanding what path you want to take. Learn about different nail systems like gel polish, BIAB, and extensions. Look into training providers that align with your goals and values. It might be tempting to choose the cheapest course out there—and I get it, we all want to save money at the start—but keep in mind that cheap doesn’t always mean it’ll set you up for a lasting career. The best education gives you the right foundation from the very beginning. If you do choose a budget-friendly course, make sure you commit to continuous learning. Plan to invest in higher-quality education later—like a one-to-one training session—to truly grow your skills. Because in the end, growing your skill is the most important investment you can make in your career.
1. Building Up Your Skill
Gel Polish & Social Media Start simple. Mastering gel polish is the best way to get familiar with tools, products, and proper technique. Focus on nail prep, cuticle care, and application methods that protect the natural nail. Start creating your colour base slowly—don’t rush to buy every shade.
Meanwhile, begin setting up your online presence. Create a basic Instagram profile, learn the basics of photography, and start tracking your income and expenses. This is also the time to get insured and start understanding what running a business really involves.
2. Building Up Your Client Base
Soft Gel Overlays (BIAB) & Social Media Once you’re comfortable with gel polish, it’s time to offer more structure and strength. BIAB or soft gel overlays are perfect for this next step. Learn how to master shaping, understand nail structure, and begin offering repairs or nail fixes. Start learning about nail diseases and how to recognise them.
Your social media can now become more intentional—start posting educational content, build relationships with your audience via stories, and learn how to do reels. Create a proper price list, set clear boundaries, and develop a salon policy that protects you and your clients.
3. Upskilling & Real-Life Skills
This stage is all about polishing the finer details. Learn to fix lifting issues, work on reducing service time without sacrificing quality, and explore more advanced nail art techniques like French tips or intricate designs.
Don’t ignore the business side. Set financial goals, price your services based on value (not fear), and create a consistent schedule for social media and client management. Branding, marketing, and knowing your worth all come into play here.
4. E-File
Before diving into extensions, it’s crucial to learn how to use an electric file. This tool saves time, improves prep precision, and helps reduce hand fatigue. Learn the different attachments, movements, and how to use it safely on natural nails. It’s a game-changer once mastered.
5. Extensions (Soft/Hard Gels, Acrylics) & Social Media
Now you’re ready to offer full sets. At this level, focus on perfecting nail structure and shaping for longer enhancements. This is where your technique gets tested—but also where you’ll start feeling truly confident in your craft.
Your online presence should reflect your growth. Post regularly, shift your focus to reels, and reinforce your brand identity. Create a new price list based on your skills, and revisit your salon policy if needed.
6. Growing Your Career & Social Media
This final step is about expansion. Start offering full sets with confidence and begin positioning yourself as a specialist. Continue learning through upskilling courses that match your direction—whether it’s art, structure, speed, or salon management.
On social media, consistency is key. Reels should take centre stage, with posts supporting them. Share your journey, show your work, and offer value to your followers.
The nail industry is constantly evolving—and so should you. You don’t need to master everything all at once. You just need to be willing to learn, grow, and adapt. Remember that every step you take builds your experience, your confidence, and your brand. Keep refining your skills before jumping to the next level. If you ever feel stuck, go back to your why—why you started, what you love about nails, and who you want to become.
Your journey is yours, but you’re not alone. Nail your skills, one step at a time.
I'm here if you need a nudge in the right direction!
