Why You Shouldn't Practise With Cheap Products

Why You Shouldn’t Practise With Cheap Products and “Save the Good Ones” for Clients

I know why you do it.

You don’t want to “waste” the expensive gel.

You tell yourself you’ll practise with the cheaper one… and use the good stuff once you’re better.

Sounds logical.

It’s not.

Because your hands are learning the behaviour of the cheap product - not the one you’ll actually use on paying clients.

And that’s where the struggle begins.

You End Up Fighting the Product

Cheap gels often:

  • Run into sidewalls

  • Shrink after curing

  • Don’t self-level properly

  • Feel unpredictable

  • Lift even when prep was correct

So what happens?

  • You start overworking it.

  • You over-file.

  • You overbuild.

  • You doubt your prep.

You think you’re the problem.

You’re not always the problem.

Sometimes you’re just training on something that makes your life harder.

Then You Switch to “The Good One” on a Client…

…and suddenly it feels different.

Thicker. Slower. Faster. More pigmented. Less flexible. Files differently.

Now your bead size is off.

Your timing feels weird.

Your pressure changes.

Because muscle memory is built on repetition - and you practised on the wrong system.

You can’t expect consistency if you’re constantly switching foundations.

You Also Can’t Track Retention Properly

If something lifts, what are you analysing?

Was it your apex?

Your stress point?

Your prep?

Or just the chemistry of a lower-quality product?

Improvement requires clean data.

Using two different systems for “practice” and “real work” muddies everything.

The Real Cost

You think you’re saving money.

But what you’re really doing is slowing your development.

  • More redos.

  • More frustration.

  • Fixing more breakages.

  • More “maybe I’m not good enough” thoughts.

  • More trial and error.

That’s expensive in ways you don’t see immediately.

If You’re Unsure What to Invest In

And I get it - choosing brands is overwhelming.

There’s so much noise. So many recommendations. So much marketing.

Where to Put Your Money First Guide for nail technicians about products, equipment.

If you’re stuck and don’t know what to choose, I’ve put together a free guide with brands I’ve personally tested and had in my salon at some point. No hype. Just experience.

Because once you pick a system - stick with it, learn it deeply, and let your hands build real control.

That’s when things start clicking.
